TO 35 diesel smokes.

I'm curious to know if anyone out there has successfully overhauled a TO 35 diesel or if Tony and I are the only ones who have attempted it. I'm also curious as to anyone's opinion of milling some more off the head.

thanks again, Alec

With the amount of compression a Standard diesel needs to run decent if you mill the head too much the head won't be strong enough to hold a head gasket. You can have custom pistons made to get the compression where it needs to be, but it's not cheap.

The head does not need milled, but the valves need to be flush with the head for best results. That's what I did on my 23C several years ago when I rebuilt it. I customized the head with new guides and Deutz valves. My tractor is the 1958 model that used the intake thermostart, head has no glow plugs. Tony has driven it at the Lagrange show and can vouch on how it starts and runs. I've got his head apart now getting valve seats put in to repair his head. While I'm happy with mine it's still not quite like a Perkins.

Can you give me an idea where the valves nee to be to give the proper compression. And does this suggest the compression would have been ok had I not had the valves ground even though the head was milled .010? Or is there a flaw in the new pistons as Tony suggested earlier? What brand were the parts Tony used? Thanks again, Alec

I purposely tried to get the valves in my head flush. Am going to get Tony's head soon, I'm hoping to have his set flush to .010 below the gasket surface. All valves were .080-.100 below before, that kills the compression heat on a diesel for starting. It may not need it , but I'm going to recheck the injection pump on my test stand too. It may have light load advance trouble that is best set on the test bench.

When dieseltech isn't working on this stuff... he puts on his armor and jousts windmills.... he has more faith in that contraption than I do.
The parts I rebuilt it with came from this site's online store. A no frills kit for the CAV pump came from a garden supply and fishing boat part's place in Mississippi? Grigg's I think it was??

Are the replacement pistons different from the originals? This tractor started tolerably before I tore it down and didn't smoke much. I tore into it mainly because of blowby, and oil consumption.
Again thanks to everyone, Alec

Hi,Alec in Missouri...I do believe that we discussed your tractors problem in person today...You'd better find that compression tester..Good luck...

Check out my tractor pulling pictures in the pulling forum..

That is possible if they were not made by the original engine manufacturer. Just like aftermarket body panels are not exactly the same as the original.

I'm more concerned with getting it to run decent and quit smoking than I am about starting, it was tolerable before I worked on it , but I did hope for some improvement. My dad bought one of these new and kept it for 12 years. He had it overhauled some time in the 60's and it turned out fine. Of course this was done by a Massey dealer and I presume with Massey parts. Naturally I hoped for similar results. Am I correct im guessing that the head modifications are partially to compensate for a flaw in the piston design? By the way I found my compression tester. Maybe tonight---

Hello Alec
I have rebuilt a 23c and it works great. Don't let Tony's story get you put off. It's great entertainment to watch, but it does not have to happen to you. This was my first diesel rebuild ! Took lots of time. Lots of patience but it worked out well in the end. Mine is a 1959. It has the glow plugs. It will start at -22°C every time without fail. I can alternately plug it in but I don't need to. I had my head done at the local engine shop. Why do it yourself for $400. Al parts are aftermarket ! I can say mine went together and runs well. Do not have enough experience to say what the general quality is. My point is it your tractor can work well. Just work your way through the problem list until it's figured out.
ciao
Alan
