Massey Ferguson MF65

I am helping a friend with two MF 65 tractors. One has a bad lower end and the other needs a valve job. He has already sent the bad head off to be rebuilt when the other one began to knock badly. He would like to take the head off of the one with the bad bottom end and put it on the other to get some tilling done. One has a g176 continental engine and the other doesn't have a tag but the head appears to fit. We would like to know if the two tractors have interchangeable heads and the head bolt torque for the continental engines used in these tractors. The tractor with the bad head is SN sgm658042, and the one with the bod lower end is SN cgw 686635. The one with the bad head also appears to have high compression pistons.

My 3165 massey has a G176. On the lower left front side of the block it has some numbers that I think start with 176 indicating it is a G176 contenental? You might take a look at the blocks. My understanding is they used a Cont and a perkins gas engine. The year of tractor probably makes a difference which engine it is. Dick

The 65 only had the G176 for gassers, the intake, and exhaust manifold will be on the same side of the head. The G176 has a 3.578" diameter bore.

They made a high arch model with the 38" tires as well as the standard. They also made a high altitude model with higher compression. I think the pistons made the difference and not the head but I am not positive.

The pistons are different, the Z series Continental is the same way, but high altitude pistons are no longer available (at least I can't find them).

The Perkins gas engine didn't come along until part way through production of the 165. I think it was 1969.
