TO35 oil change Z134 engine

Today I changed the oil and filter in my 1957 TO35, I always find the old oil filter hard to get out of the metal canister,
I had to attach vice grip pliers on the head of the bolt, scotch the body of the canister and continue to jerk on the head of the bolt until it came out,

I can not believe Harry would have let his boys design a oil filter to be changed in this manner,
It came out, I insured the spring and washer were in place before I inserted the new filter,
I use Napa gold oil filters, they appear to be good quality filters, the rubber gaskets on each end of the filter fit tight, guess that is why it takes such an effort to get the center bolt out,

Anyone got a better plan on this yearly maintenance procedure,

I've noticed that some brand filter have smaller holes. The last one I bought was a Wix and had to really push hard to get the bolt to start. I took it back where I bought it but it was just like all the others. Years ago they were never this hard to pull out. You could remove it with just the small handle on top of filter. Now they don't have it.

These Napa gold filters may be made by wix, they have the small wire handle,
I would assume it was made to assist you in removing the filter, but not much help as the filter fits so tight,
Next year I may buy the oil filter at the Ferguson dealership, see if it's any easier to get on/off,

But at least, when installed, it did not leak and oil pressure came right up,
Problems like these make you wish for a spin on oil filter, I know they make a kit to change to a spin on filter, but I am old school, will just deal with the canister filters,

a couple years ago someone brought to my attention, after I posted a pic of my MF20 with a spin on... how dangerous it looked, a thin sheetmetal can hanging there under the axle's low point. Don't mater pretty soon, it seems most new cars will be coming out with canisters... again... after a 65 year experiment with spin on's huh? My pet peev is checking and stopping the drips for days afterwards. If yours don't , cool!

funny you mention that,
my 2013 Toyota van has a canister oil filter, our third Toyota van the first one, maybe the second had spin on filters.
I do not know why they changed back, the canister on the new one hangs down and has a valve to drain the oil out, before you loosen the canister. nice touch, guess so you do not get oil all over the shop floor,

as I did changing out the old Fergie canister oil filter, also had it all over my work bench as I was trying to pull the center bolt loose,
