MF 255 injector pump timing

I recently bought an MF 255 diesel. It had sat for an unknown number of years without running. (Fortunately it was shedded the whole time)

We cleaned out the gas tank, blew out the fuel lines, etc. Also took the injector pump off and took it to a shop to be rebuilt.

The tractor started with the new pump. I drove it around a bit, but have not had time to work it. I hope to put a mower on it soon to put a load on the engine and see how it runs.

When I reinstalled the pump, I noticed that the holes on the pump are slotted. Looks like you turn the pump one way or another to time the thing.

I got out my timing light, and clamped the sensor on the line to the #1 injector . But I can't get the light to work, and can't find the marks on the flywheel.

O.K. - Just kidding about the timing light. :D Just checking to see if you're paying attention.

I have no clue how to time a diesel. Can ya help me out?

I found a mark on the pump, but nothing on the housing. Forgot my camera, so didn't get a picture.

If it turns out there's no mark, what's next?

The timing cover mark may be really faint, or missing if the cover has been replaced. If the engine does not have blue-white smoke at 2200 no load speed timing is probably OK. If it does smoke it could be advanced slightly to clear the exhaust smoke by turning the pump housing top away from the engine. That pump is fixed phase timing, with no advance. If timing is advanced too much engine will start harder cold.
