mf 165 ipto will not stay engaged

Have MF 165 and the IPTO leaver will not stay in on position. I can hear the detent clicking into position with tractor not running. I can roll pto shaft with my hand.
With engine running I can feel pump pulsing when lever is raised to on position. Pto constantly turns in neutrall but can be stoped with wood placed hard against shaft.
The lift arms work but drop soon after tractor is stoped.
Have had lift cover off twice and can see no visual problems.
Donot know if it matters but have a set of quick connects coming out of left side plate running through a valve to front cooler and back to housing.
Could really use help on this guys. Any help or ideas at all.

The PTO shift lever on independent PTO models has a really long travel to get into the detent position. The shift cover has a spring and plunger to hold the lever, which will be almost vertical in the on position. Have never seen this fail, but when I worked at the MF dealer years ago had a customer said his would not stay on either. Found he was only moving the lever until he saw the shaft start turning and then released it. He was used to the dual clutch PTO, those levers don't travel nearly as far. The lever just has to hold a small spool valve, you should feel the same detent resistance in both off and on positions.

Attached are photos of my 150 with IPTO. My tractor is not here, so I can't look at the left cover plate with the lever. There may be a plug on the cover to access the spring and ball?

As to the lift arms dropping, they use the main pump and your rings in the lift cyl may need replaced.

"PTO turning in off position". There is a brake disc on the IPTO clutch hub and a caliper with pad. Oil pressure is supplied to the brake when the lever is in the off position. Mine did the same thing. The caliper piston was stuck, I was able to get a small pry bar in there to brake it loose.

I believe that the brake system was Never meant to stop equipment, but only to hold the PTO shaft. I put an over-running clutch on mine. Think of the mass when trying to stop a Brush Cutter, that little brake will never do it.

What hurts the brake on the ipto equipped tractors is when you cut the pto off before idling the engine down. Idling the engine before cutting the ipto off allows the engine to slow down (engine brake) the implement that's being ran rather than relying on the brake. The ipto brake is good for the occasional emergency stop where idling the engine down first won't stop it fast enough.
