mf 165 ipto will not stay engaged

Have MF 165 and the IPTO leaver will not stay in on position. I can hear the detent clicking into position with tractor not running. I can roll pto shaft with my hand.
With engine running I can feel pump pulsing when lever is raised to on position. Pto constantly turns in neutrall but can be stoped with wood placed hard against shaft.
The lift arms work but drop soon after tractor is stoped.
Have had lift cover off twice and can see no visual problems.
Donot know if it matters but have a set of quick connects coming out of left side plate running through a valve to front cooler and back to housing.
Could really use help on this guys. Any help or ideas at all.

Thanks guys for the replies.
The pics are great.
I have two 165s and understand the travel on the ipto lever. I wish it were that simple a problem.
This tractor has no access to remove the filter either from the side or belly or underside. Do I have to brake the tractor into two to replace the filter ? If it were the filter plugged how would this act differently? Does the lever require hyd. pressure to keep it engaged?
I understand the brake and it does make good sense to slow rpms before disengaging ipto. Does the brake act only on a disk around the shaft or ?

You are correct about NO access to clean the filters (2) on tractors with IPTO. The lift cover has to come off. Still, the main pump filter is a bear to get out. I think I removed the drive coupler to get to the lift filter. Both are cleanable screens. IPTO pump filter held on pump with two bolts. You mentioned a pulse in Hyd, could be IPTO filter.

The brake is just a small pad against the disc mounted to the IPTO clutch housing. Hyd pressure does NOT hold the lever in place, just the detent and spring plunger. Have you checked the pump pressure at the test port? Think it should be 125-150 with IPTO engaged. If you have muti-power, the pump pressure is higher, I don't know the psi but others would.

Of course, all my input is from working on my 150. 165's may be slightly different. If you have the larger combination pump installed, that's a new world to me.
