replace 3pth pivot pin MF50

Hello folks. I'm new here. I need to replace the right side 3pth pivot pin on a MF50. Haven't taken the wheels off yet but I read on this site that I have to remove the left hand axle first, support some gearing inside and then remove the right hand axle. Do I need another person to support the gears? Is it possible to just slide the right side trumpet (housing) off the axle far enough to get access to that pivot bolt leaving the axle in place or am I asking for trouble trying that? Don't know if the housing hole is damaged. A friend of mine was using the 3pth to yank out some pretty heavy logs out of the bush for firewood.

Not that much, but enough. I call it a 3 day job for a 3 dollar part. Support the diff, take off the wheel and brake rigging, then use a tranny or rolling jack to just move the axle away far enough to reach in - a foot or so? Get another nut at a hardware store or? So you can 'double nut it'. Unless you got a castle one? These will loosen as often as break. Scoop out the goop in there and clean things out, put in new 10w-40 or whatever the gang is agreeing on lately... btw, there is a gasket on the trumpet, try not to wreck it, and smear a little gasket sealer before sliding back together. You friend broke it, make him help you fix it! Have fun!

The gentleman is my mothers friend and he's quite elderly so he can't help mcuh. I wasn't around when he was doing that. I was sort of suprised that he used the 3pth. He's an oldtimer that used haul pulp wood out of the bush with horses.

Well, I was going to start taking it apart but the weather turned and we got a couple of dumps of snow. Put the blower back on. Got fooled by thinking we had an early spring. After further research I think I don't have to fret about axle parts falling off inside because this tractor doesn't have diff lock. But I got to thinking, what holds the axle in place once the wheel is off? I changed seals on my F150 and there's an axle retaining lock bolt inside the rear diff. I'm going to try sliding the housing back off the axle but I bought some seals and might change them at the same time. Thanks for the heads up about reminding me about the gasket. I would have taken it all apart and said #@x>!!. Need a gasket and then take another 2 hour drive. That bolt was pricey enough. $37

The 50 should have drum brakes, just remove the drum, remove the bolts that holds the backing plate for the brakes, and the axle should come out (like the older Ford trucks). Then all you need to do is to un-bolt, and remove the axle housing (or the trumpet as some call it) from the center section. Then replace the pin, and put it back together.

Thanks to everyone. The job went well. The bolt had just loosened. Had to fight with the drum screws. As I was taking it apart I kept thinking what holds this axle in place. I didn't know just the outer bearing kept it from sliding out. What should I torque the axle and wheel nuts to?

For the 12 bolt axle retainer my book says 50-55 ft lbs. For the wheel nuts I just use a 1/2" drive impact (usually something like 100-125 ft lbs for the wheels) then check them after you use it for a little while. Those drum retaining screws can be a real bear to remove sometimes (I've had to drill a few out to get the drum off)..
