180 rack and pinion

I'm working on my 180, trying to change the seal in the bottom of the cylinder housing. My manual says to remove the top cover. I can only get it to lift up half an inch. I don't see what is holding it on but don't want to force anything either. My parts book doesn't show anything. My parts book also shows a different housing than what I have also. Does anyone have any experience with these? I've done the one on my Super 90 but its a little different animal.

What's your SN? Massey had two steering boxes, an early with the round six bolt shaft and the later one for wide front use only. They come apart different.

That's the late one, has four 3/8 inch top cap bolts. To get it apart there's an expansion plug in the cap top center to pry out, then you can get to the snap ring and thrust washer to remove them for the cap to come off. Expansion plug # is 19467X, and the lower seal is # 834 064 M1. Be careful and mark the shaft/gear spline relationship, not sure if they are marked now or not.

You saved my bacon again Dieseltech. That bottom snap ring was fun. I broke my quality harbor freight snap ring pliers first thing. Now I need some parts. Thanks!
