35x won't take all her engine oil....

I have a 1963 Massey 35x with an A3.152 Perkins engine. She generally runs well and last had an oil change about 50 hours ago.

I decide to change the engine oil and filter last night. I ran the engine for about 40 minutes so she was nice and warm, I drained the oil
but didn?t get anything like 6 litres of oil out ? only about 3 litres ish. The dip stick read just under full before I drainer her, so no
issue there. I was on level ground. The filler cap was off. I can?t work out if there some sludgy build up of old oil hiding in the engine
or there?s a blockage and she just won?t take that much oil? The oil pressure is fine.

The old filter had oil in it and I have now changed it as I should. I could only got about 3 litres back in before the dip stick read full.

I just can?t work out the problem ? any pointers of where to start? I?d be very grateful?.is DavidP from South Wales out there??!

Thanks in advance.

Did you check the drain to see if it was clogged with something? Poke a screwdriver or something in it to see if some sludge kept it from draining? You only drained out 3 litres so it stands to reason that three would bring the level back to full.It has happened to me before with older sludged up engines.

I also own a 1963 Massey 35x with an A3.152 Perkins engine:

Remove ITEM #2 from bottom of engine oil PAN.

With flash lite, mirror, and your hand check inside oil pan:

Hello,
First of all make sure that the drain hole is completely clear even if it means draining the fresh oil into a clean container. As you have a 35X it is unlikely that you will have the removable strainer plate on the underside of the sump. If you do it is worth removing it to inspect the condition of the strainer and secondly to check the floor of the sump for any sludge or other debris.

A strong possibility to be the cause of your problem is a faulty dipstick. The dipstick should have a Perkins number 31786412 on it. You may have the wrong dipstick. A very likely possibility is that the sealing cup on the dipstick has moved. If it has moved twoards the pull ring it will show the engine being full ahead of the amount of oil added. The distance from the underside of the cup to the bottom tip of the dipstick should be 7 1/16" or 80mm.

Let us know what you find.

Thanks for the replies - all very helpful.

I've checked the dipstick and it's got the right number and the cup's in the right place - thanks David.

I finally measured the engine oil I removed, I have 5 litres, so a bit more than I though. My next step will be to drop the strainer out the bottom the sump and have a look and feel around - more news to follow.

My FE 35 X 3 cylinder Perkins S # SNMY320137 came with a TACH that has STANDARD PTO 540 RPM at 1700 Engine RPM. and a removable inspection plate at the bottom of the Oil PAN; Tractor was purchased new by my Parents.

I'm interested in the SERIAL # of your TRACTOR:

Thanks

Hi Bob,

Mine is SNMY 319953, so slightly earlier than yours. She was first registered in 1963. My grandfather bought her in 1967, my father sold her as a wreck in 2000, I got her back in 2014 after a lot of searching. Mine also has the same 540 PTO speed at 1700rpm, this confirms that they are 35x's and not just 35's. More power and more revs!

Mine also has the removable strainer on the sump - which is going to get removed this weekend! On a boring note, my tractor had the clam shaped wings originally rather than the later safety fenders.
