Massey Ferguson won't start.

I have a Massey Ferguson 65 diesel tractor that won't start today - worked fine yesterday. No smoke at all when I try to start it. The filters are okay so I'm going to take a look at the fuel pump. What should the pressure be?

If you have any other suggestions please advise!

Thank you.

Well, assuming the starter is turning over the engine fine, my not very smart idea would be check to make sure there is fuel. Make sure there's oil too. Smart guys will chime in here and give expertise advice

I would also look to see if the shut off cable is moving the lever on the injector pump, I had that happen to mine when the cable became loose, it pulled fine to shut off engine but would not push lever to start engine.

Yes, I checked and there is fuel but it doesn't appear to be getting to the cylinders.

The cut off lever is working and I checked it in both directions - did not start. Engine is turning over fine.
It is either the fuel pump or the injector pump since those are the last two things in line.

I'd suspect the injection pump metering valve and/or the rotor plungers are stuck in the no fuel position. I've been repairing lots of pumps like that lately, especially if there's ever been any water in the fuel, or bio fuel used. Worst case is the rotor shaft is sheared in two..

Dieseltech,

Thank you.

This makes sense to me as that is exactly how it behaves. Is there a drawing somewhere that I can get that would show me what parts you are talking about?

I would break loose one of the injector output lines, turn the engine over with the starter and see if you have fuel there. If there is no fuel there, go to the fuel line into the injector pump from the filters, break it loose and hand pump the transfer pump. If you have fuel there then the problem is in the injector pump. If not, keep going back up the system till you find the problem.

Will these pics help?
