You fellers like your Super 90

There is one coming up on an auction, it is a diesel, does not say whether it has MP or not, just wide front and runs
good, and good rubber. The auction co didn't even include a pic on there website, all the other stuff but not the
Massey! Was looking for parts for it since most on the net said they are hard to find parts for, I found most
everything except the hydraulic pump. So the million dollar question do you fellers like them or should I pass it by? I
was more hoping to find a 1080, but if it goes cheap, what the heck!

I like mine. MP parts are made of unobtainium. Mine went out and parts couldn't be found so he put an 85 arse end on it. Its a beast on the square baler and goes down the road like a scairt cat.

Best tractor in their size...bar none
I have 9 of them here...and have bought, repaired and sold multiple others.
Like any other tractor, they have some things you will have to watch out for.
Check the front wheels for sideways play. Grab the top of wheel and pull/push. If it has play the bearings may need replacing, but most likely just tightening.
They will turn on a dime, very tight turning radius.
The 300 Perkins diesel engine is quite forgiving, and will run quite economically.
You will probably have to do a head gasket, at some time. However if you don't really over work it...it will run for years...they are getting on 50+ years old. You were looking for a 1080...it has basically the same engine (318 Perkins) as the 90, with the same head gasket difficulty.
Have a look at the gear shift boots...if they are cracked you may have water in the transmission, dipstick may show milky oil. this will have to be changed, or it could damage your Power Steering pump, and other components.
The power steering pump....If they start the tractor...it should turn the front wheels at an idle with no real effort...if it has to be reved up...the PS pump is weak. A good PS pump will "squeal" the relief valve when you turn the wheels all the way to the ends (like a PS belt when your wife drives the truck...Oops shouldn't have said that).
If the 90 is a Multi-Power (should have a flip up/down lever below steering wheel on right side) the PS pump needs to be strong, or the MP clutches could get damaged. Same with the PTO clutches...PS pump MUST be strong to "lock" the clutches, so they don't slip.
Parts are getting hard to find...especially engine (sleeves, Pistons, some gaskets) and MP (Clutches, seals) However, if you need...I do have a large supply of new and used parts.
Check the water pump for front/back play by wiggling the fan blades...if there is play it will need a seal + bearings in near future.
Check to see if the brake pedals don't push right to the floor, if they do, the brakes need repair....rough job, but not completely necessary.
Check to see if the clutch pedal has resistance...if it is NOT the MP version.
Just a few things to check...Hope this helps.

I like that IF NOT OVER WORKED they will last,85s & 90s were the worst of anything. They were the end of the 60-80 hps for MF.Been close to 10 yrs since even seen one other then in JUNK YARD.We had both and couldn't get rid of fast enough.Either engine or trans problems.

My Dad has 2 Super 90 Non-Multipower diesels he bought in the 80's. Both have been great and worked VERY hard over the years and are still running strong. Neither have ever had to be overhauled or split. I will say they have been very well maintained though with regular oil changes etc. Good power for the size, easy on fuel, fast road gear, very good power steering system and 3 point and turn very short as was mentioned earlier. Like others have said, they are 50+ years old and if you need to rebuild something, some parts will probably be hard to get these days so watch out for tractors that have been neglected and abused.

I like playing with mine too. With a few engine mods it makes a fun 200HP+ light weight 5 and 6 MPH puller. Do need to get rid of the head gasket though..

I have 3 Super 90 Diesels, one with multi power, and one gas 90. Also have three MF 85, gas and diesel. One has MF 85 loader on it. All of them get used. No problems with any of them.
