Bought Massey M40 B at auction. according to serial number its about 1979. Hoping someone could advise me if Trans and hydraulics are same reservoir and what hydraulic oil to use.
Im gonna move it to the barn and start working on it but dont want to move it til Im sure Ive got everything full of the right stuff.

thanks, Paul in Texas

They usually share the hydraulic with the transmission unless if it has a attachment that has its own reservoir. The transmission/hydraulic/rear end uses MF Permatran III oil. You should be able to find other brands of trans/hydraulic oil that meets the MF Permatran III spec.

Same stuff. Any good quality hy tran will
work. DipStick is behind your right foot if
you're sitting on the seat. Fill is to the
left of the shifters. If it's an instant
reverse, things might be different. FYI,
can buy manuals on ebay for around 10-15
bucks.

Thanks, had no trouble locating fluid that met the spec. Got her unloaded and was very impressed. a real tank! and with no electronics. Got a couple of leaking cylinders but motor and trans work well. Has 2 pedals Forward and reverse.

1 shifter is marked L S H

the other, taller , shifter unmarked... looking for MF 40 B manuals or CD's

thanks!

Awesome bit of kit the 40B - lucky you, I was after one over here, but most of them are shot away.

L,S,H - that's your Low ratio, 'Start' position (neutral on the ratio box) and High ratio. The 'Start' position should be the only place the engine will start, but often the switch associated with this died years ago, so was shorted out - consequently the machine will happily start in any gear you like. Be warned, and do not start the machine unless you are sitting in the seat!

The other gearlever to the left of the ratio box [i:caaeb40b78]should[/i:caaeb40b78] be as follows - as I [b:caaeb40b78][u:caaeb40b78]think[/u:caaeb40b78][/b:caaeb40b78] it's the same as the 65 'box.

Top left, reverse
Bottom left, 1st
Top right, 2nd
Bottom right 3rd

If I read your post right, the left foot pedal is the clutch, the right foot pedal is the brakes - if it is a 'rocker' type pedal on the right hand side, as has been said, you have an instant reverse type box with a torque converter - [b:caaeb40b78]don't[/b:caaeb40b78] shift from forwards to reverse when the tractor is moving - you run the risk of damage to the torque converter.

I have two pedals on the right. One forward one reverse.

two gear ranges Low, Start, and High

and a 2 speed transmission 1st , and 2nd

It was that "S" for Start that was throwing me off. I was trying to make it low, second, and high. here is my latest update if any of you have anymore tips for me. I greatly appreciate it and so far very pleased with the TLB:

OK, Im marching right along with the MF 40B TLB. I have MF 54A Back hoe and MF 34A Loader. Thanks to you guys, I got the correct fluid in her and found a few leaking cylinders. 2 on Loader , 2 on backhoe . Got those rebuilt and now shes doing everything that she is supposed to do

Next project is loader bucket is loose at pins. On closer inspection, I have found the remnants of some bushings that are just worn though on one side or missing. My question is are these loader pins original design or did previous owner install some bushings to keep this thing tight for awhile? Does anyone have a source for these bushings or suggestions on cutting down some stock to make these bushings?
