MF 65 Perkins A4D-203 injector pump timing

I have a 1962 MF 65 with direct injection Perkins A4D-203 diesel engine which was just completely overhauled. I set the timing gears at TDC, with No. 1 rockers in neutral and No. 4 going down. The manual says I should have a "C" in the injector timing window but that is not possible to obtain. I checked the spill of the No 1 injector at 20 BTDC and it appears to be correct. Is the manual wrong or does anyone know of a reason why it would be different?

The injector pump has a master spline and cannot be changed. The injector drive dowel will only connect in this one position. The gears are factory marked and installed with all marks correctly meshed. The mounting studs for the injector pump only allows minor adjustments.

Wrong letter, C is for the early Perkins regular diesel. AD4.203 used on late models use letter B at 24 degrees BTDC. May also be a chance the snap ring location was not set when the final timing was done too. If the engine is assembled correctly the pump will be in time using the flange timing mark. Most late spec sheets give no internal letter mark..

[b:5b06896206]Thank you so much for this information. [/b:5b06896206] How did you obtain it? I have internet searched trying to understand what was going on for a couple of weeks. The manual says C at 18 on early models and C at 20 for later models. No mention of B at all or of 24. The location of the snap ring in the injector pump has not been changed. The gears are in time per the manufacturer's marks, and the flange marks per the originals at the time of removal. My new $500 high torque starter was a bust. Solenoid failed on the first try to crank it, so it had to be returned. I have tried to tow start but learned it could not be tow started, so now I am awaiting another starter. This issue has been a real pain for me to try to understand what was going on. Also with all the pipe connections in the system, getting all the leaks stopped and air out of the dry system was a real chore. I did see a video from Australia saying B upon removal and replacement of the injector pump for overhaul, but initially thought he may be mistaken because the manual said otherwise.

The late 65s had the AD4.203 like the 165s did. The first 65s used the A4.203 regular diesel, different head, flat top pistons, two hole straight up-down injectors, injection pump had light load advance. AD4.203 direct injected engine had the combustion chamber bowl in the piston, injectors angled in the head with four holes, and injection pump was fixed phase, no advance. Another easy way to tell the engines apart is the regular diesel had a two part oil pan, rear part was wedge shaped..

The A4.192 diesel (top picture), and the AD4.203 diesel (bottom picture), note the differences as indicated by the red boxes.

Thank you both Dieseltech and PTfarmer! I now have the confidence to put the front end of the tractor back on while waiting for the new starter because the gearing is in correctly. Hopefully the posting of this information will help others in the future. Is there a special manual for the Perkins AD4-203? The manual I purchased from Yesterday's Tractor did have a section on the AD4-203 overhaul, but that section did not address timing of the injection pump at all. In retrospect, I obviously made an error in trying to apply A4 timing to this AD-4, but it does seem the manual should have addressed this issue as it did with the A4.
