knew I needed a new starter for the Massey 135 Perkins so I went on line searched and bought one from Amazon that said it would fit. The original starter has 4 wires and the new starter has a different set up with no instructions on which wires go where. Any help is greatly appreciated!! Tried to post pictures so you could see old and new on the last post but it didn't work.. so I am trying again

According to the AGCO online parts book 651199, 135 Tractor, both gas & diesel engine use 1025381M91 1 (A) Solenoid Assembly (Delco-remy #1114-356). Please check the book to confirm this is correct before ordering. This should be available from most auto parts stores.

Looking at your photo, you know the battery connects to the large solenoid terminal.
and there is a small wire from your key switch that connects to one of the smaller terminals.
Are there any markings next to these small terminals like "S", start or "R", run ?
Have you a voltmeter? if so disconnect the solid jumper from solenoid to starter[ starter will not turn over now], locate
the small wire from your key switch, by reading 12 volts when turned to start, connect this wire to the small solenoid
terminal marked "S".
the solenoid should click in and push the starter drive gear out as if engaging the flywheel.
All this is done on the work bench, thats why you removed the solid jumper, re-install it and install the starter on
tractor.
Being it came from a "supplier" check the mechanical features of the new, match the features of the old also.
hope I understood what you wanted and it helps

Good answer, don't really want to go off topic. I under stand the S (start) function, but what does the R (run ) function do ?

good answer or right answer..as long as it helped.
The "R" terminal is for a gas engine...it has 12 volts on it when the starter is engaged and is
connected to the coil, and would of bypassed a ballast resistor in series with the coil.
So it has power as the engine is rolling over, and no power when the starter is not engaged, the coil getting its power through the key switch once the engine starts.
If you still have the starter off for the previous tests, you can see this with your test meter, or
if its installed you can see the voltage with your test meter when you do start it.
I assumed you have the diesel engine in my notes.
Of course we don't know what may of been changed in the wiring over the years...key start switch/key and push button/etc etc.
still of help i hope.

After asking the question, I pulled out an old service manual and phil25's answer is spot on. Guess I was just being lazy  , so the new solenoid is a multi functional as they say. The only thing is, the other post will be hot while the starter is engaged. Sorry if I caused any one to needlessly but an other solenoid, I prefer to replace components in kind.
