friend of mine has an IMT 542, he says it runs good but, the lift does not work. he had someone work on it and he spent $1,000.00 on it then. is this tractor worth $700.00?

I would steer away from it (that's my opinion). Parts maybe a problem to get.

"Imitation Massey Tractor" you might be ok if you knew what exact model it crosses to.

I think if everything else works and it's a diesel 8 speed live PTO tractor $700 is fair, 3pt can't be anything worse than any usual MF stuff?

should be a 6 speed, perkins engine but not quite a Massey. I had a 560 deluxe. not worth much
