MF 255, 3 pt won't hold up CCM Drum Mower

MF 255. Bought a CCM drum mower that swings back to transport. 3 point lifts fine in off side mowing position, but when you swing it to transport the 3 point lift drops and can't support mower. What could be the cause? It has fresh hydraulic fluid and filter less than 3 engine hours ago.

With nothing hooked to the 3 point arms, raise the arms all the way up, then shut the engine off, and see how long it takes the arms to drop all the way down.

Hi, as PT has said you can check how long it takes for the linkage to fall. A further check would be to remove the top link and fit a chain between the hinged pin lugs and the mower. You will not have anything exerting a load on the control spring assembly. The mower when in transport is quite heavy. If there is wear/play in the control spring this can influence the control valve to not move into the pumping position fully. If it lifts satisfactorily then the control spring assembly will require attention.

Thanks guys. I lifted 3 point arms this morning under no load, shut engine off. No drift or drop off noticed this afternoon. Also checked o rings in switch between 3pt and loader controls.

The fact that the arms stayed up is good (I worked on some that would drop really fast once the engine was off). I would move on to the test DavidP suggested about removing the top solid link on the 3 point, and replace it with a chain then see if it will lift the cutter in the transport position. Do you know what the total weight of the cutter is? and also how much more does the cutter stick the back in the transport position compared to when its the cutting position? If the cutter sticks way out the back while in the transport position it maybe too much weight for the 3 point to lift.

I have a drum mower that I use with my 245. It also swings to the back for transport. They are really heavy. Even with a bunch of front weight it's a little sketchy loading in on my gooseneck trailer. That said the 245 will lift the mower but it works it pretty hard. Next to the 3 point lift control there is the draft control handle on mine. If that thing is in slightly the wrong position the 3 point will not lift the mower. Might adjust that a little and see if it helps.

remove top link from tractor side grab draft control (top link connection) and try to move in/out. should be no movement if there is draft spring needs to be adjusted. remove rubber boot, undo allen head set screw in left side of top cover near spring. turn in until endfloat just disapears. too much and more endfloat will appear like overcentering. if float remains it may be necessary to remove spring assembly and make adjustment on spring tension itself. you should not be able to easily turn spring in holder careful of retaining pin for internal spring tension. tapered pin and have to remove from correct end
