Massey 135 Diesel

Hi guys,

One of the tractors I'm consider as my first is a Massey 135 Diesel. Everything works on it and had an engine overhaul about 1k hours ago. Tires are good, except fronts have some cracking. Lift and PTO work good and it comes with a 5 ft brush hog in good condition. The photo above is the only one I have of it, but given these specs, what is it worth roughly? The gentleman who owns it wants $4500 for both tractor and mower.

I have 10 acres I need to brush hog and grade occasionally, would this be a good choice for those tasks?

Thanks,

Jeff

For 10 acres it's a good tractor for that. The Perkins AD3.152 diesel is very reliable, and very fuel efficient engine for a mechanical injected diesel engine. The thing to check is front axle pivot, spindles for excessive wear, and the steering box for play (steering box parts aren't cheap). If all is good (new front tires aren't that expensive). It looks to be in pretty good shape, if it were me I'd start with a $3500 cash offer, and go from there. If the steering box has a lot of play, and or if the front bushings are worn $4500 is a bit on the high side.

A little on the high side but some of that would depend on the quality of the mower. They couldn't get $2800 for a gas one at an auction I went to this fall. However the same machine is on CL for $4500 right now. I just picked up a decent 175 for $3500 delivered from 250 miles away. The 135 should be a great little tractor for what you're looking to do but there are some bigger ones out there for similar money. Good Luck!

Thanks Brendon. One reason for the size is to be able to trailer it with my 7k capacity 16ft tandem pulled by my Tahoe. That leaves me a 4.5k tractor weight max. Or actually less depending on the implement. What size brush hog can a diesel pull on pasture grass? Anyone know?

That 135 should run a 5 or 6 footer on pasture no problem. Yeah you'd be pushing the weight limits with a 175. A 65 MF would be lighter and they run around the same $.

It was a lot work to get it there, Paid $1500 for it not running, got it running, repainted it because it was yellow, and the cab was one he built in the 1980's. When he sold that tractor the guy didn't want the cab so it sat outside for years. The only window that didn't get broken was the front windshield so I added the wire mesh to protect me from mesquite branches.

I would strongly suggest you have someone work the clutch pedal all the way down and check for crankshaft THRUST with engine NOT running. I recall a MF 135 3 cylinder Perkins diesel as well as a MF 35 X 3 cylinder Perkins diesel engine that were used on square hay balers. Check to see how much movement there is on the CRANCKSHSAFT when someone depresses the clutch pedal all the way down. The two Tractors that come to mind, had to have the THRUST COLLARS built up. I'm not suggesting to check the Crankshaft thrust with a dial indicator, place your fingers behind the crankshaft pulley drive(fan belt)and see if there is excessive movement....eg. .020 +

Bob..

The paint is mixture of Rustoleum gloss black, smoke grey, and aluminum. One quart of each color, I also mixed in some acrylic enamel wet look hardener, and used acrylic enamel reducer. The picture was taken 3 days after I painted it, now it got too cool, windy, along with some rain to paint the wheels, and sheet metal. Now I have to wait for a couple of days of good weather to finish painting everything else.
