New Z-134 crank timing gear loose

Hey all, the governor recently went up in my Massey. I went to replace it along with both timing gears. Got it all back together, timed and torqued the governor. When I ran it there was a vibration in the front end. Pulled the timing cover off and found the new crank gear is loose on the crankshaft and had slide forward a quarter inch past the cam gear. I can wiggle it a little with my hand while it is on the shaft. Is it normal or okay for the gear to be this loose? The old one was on there good and tight. I will get a tool to measure the shaft diameter but am not sure what it should be. Thanks in advance.

The gear should not have moved forward, the oil deflector and front crank pulley SHOULD hold gear back against the crank shoulder when the pulley hardware is tight. Gear may not be really tight but should not be really loose either on the crank nose..

Sounds like the gear wasn't machined properly, but with the front pulley on, and the crank bolt tightened the gear shouldn't be able to move forward at all. I'd only change the gears if they were really messed up, some of the aftermarket parts just don't fit like they should.

(quoted from post at 03:05:22 02/21/16) One more thought, check the crank end play, if more than .010 you have thrust bearing trouble, and possibly more wrong.

I will check, but the crank seems really tight. It doesn't move at all. I did run it with the pulley and without because I thought the pulley was possibly making the vibration. It probably moved when the pulley was off.

The issue is hard to describe, it's a little bit of a vibration and a high pitched sound. Could it just be the new gears wearing in?

The gears did need to be changed, the cam gear was missing teeth. Is it worth ordering a new crank gear and seeing if it is tighter? I don't know often parts are out of spec.

I would call whoever you got the gears from, and tell them the problem. If the company is any good they should send you another set of gears at no charge.
