Iam looking at buying one of twp tractors. either an ford 8n are a mf 130. i need a tractor that can clear an 8 acre plot of land that is covered with old groth sage brush, some as tall as 6 ft. whitch tractor would you recomend? i also just bought an heavy 6 ft tiller. whitch tractor would run it best, I am wanting to dryland farm the 8 acres, hat equipment would you recomend for the job.

I'm a Ford guy and I'll admit the 130 would be a better tractor simply because it's newer and just has better features. The 8n will still get your work done though. Parts for the Fords are every where so that's something to put into consideration.

The 130 is a diesel with 8 speeds forward, and 2 reverse, a lot better selection of gears than a 8n. I think a 135 would be a better tractor for what you are going to use it for.

I have an 8N, and other than reading specs on the 130, I cant give you an opinion on that one. The 130 is heavier, more power, better gearing (slower speeds avail), and has live PTO which are all a benefit over the 8N.

I have a 5ft rotary cutter, the 8N doesn't like mowing real heavy or tall grass for lack of power, the gearing is too fast for a tiller IMO. Also non live PTO would be a hindrance, its just not big on power or weight.

The 130 is pretty rare and you might (probably will) have problems finding parts if needed. I would look for a MF 135, 245, 230, 240. or maybe Ford 2000/3000, even the MF 35.

If you go with the 130 you need to swap that 6 ft tiller for a 5 ft tiller,

A 245 MF or a 3600 Ford would be better matched to the 6 ft tiller

The little 8N is a great little tractor, but they are 65+ years old, really not well suited to run a tiller, no live pto, low gear is too fast for tilling,

Just my opinion

Forgot to add in my first post. 6 foot tiller won't work on any of them. Not sure about the Massey but the 8n's are too fast even in 1st gear to handle a tiller.

I do agree with all the post below about nether running the tiller, but you mentioned 'sage', so I am going to think you are in soil that isn't as wet and thick as say- Brendon's Saint Lawrence valley black muck. So the 130 'might' do the job, maybe work well in a dry season, I bet the Ford will never do it at all....
If they are selling for about the same price, get the 130 anyway.

(quoted from post at 04:35:07 02/18/16) Like was said 130. 135 would be good too. I don't think any of them will like running a 6ft rototiller.

I run a 84" wide shredder behind my 2135 gasser cutting mesquites up to 4' tall with no problems. It will also handle a 6' tiller easy.

My vote is neither one. Find a MF 135 or 235, you'll be MUCH better off. Brother has a 130, cute little outfit and I like MF but it has little to NO parts support. Just my 3 cents, cause of inflation...

My brother in-law runs an 8N.I run a 1963 Massey Ferguson 35 X 6 speeds ahead transmission, 3 cylinder Perkins diesel....44 HP at standard PTO with a locking diff. The 35 X has a creeper first gear in low range. The MF 35 X is so far ahead of the 8N it's in a whole different class. For my self if I'm going to run the size of PTO equipment you are thinking of be sure to have 40+ HP and plenty of gears.

experience speaking here ---- If you want something to be constantly working on, poor brakes, even to the point of trying to get it to start. buy the 8n. It you want something dependable that is going to start when you need and want it to buy the MF.

The French built 130 is a nice little tractor BUT they do not share any parts with any 100 series tractor, not even a 135. Way back in The 1970's a Massey dealer told me that getting parts for The 130 was difficult in The UK at least.
