MF50 industrial rear pto turns wrong direction.

Snowchaser

Howdy, i have a mf50 industrial model (mid to late 70's i think) all yellow. I recently got a 3 pt snowblower attachment for it and the pto turns the wrong direction in reverse. This snow blower came off of a similar massey ferguson tractor, only smaller. It turns the right direction in forward and reverses in revers. My local massey ferguson guys didnt know. They said the pto should turn the same direction regardless. Also, they said the "ground" pto selector is rpm sensitive while the "rear" pto selector is constant regardless of rpm. The only thing i noticed is the selector lever is below the floor board when in "ground" and the pto doesnt move at all, but shift it into "rear" and it engages. The little bit of snow caked in the blower shot out a long ways when i did this in forward gears. Wondering if there is a lever to change directions on the pto??? I am a mechanic, just never messed with tractors till now. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

You seem to have a tractor with torque converter drive and unfortunately that is the way it works!....you need a tractor with a clutch drive and manual gearbox.....The MF 50 does come this way, just like an MF165 and they are very good tractors....

Yeah, some of those industrial MF's the PTO does run backwards in reverse. Sort of useless for a conventional snow blower.

Samn40 has it right, my 205 industrial has the torque converter and the PTO turns reverse when backing up. I had to put an over running
clutch on it to be able to use the PTO. Could be disastrous using some equipment without it. I consider this a major design flaw by MF.

Thats what i was afraid of. Oh well, not a big deal. I have a large walk behind blower, and my driveway is only about 40 yards long. The tractor is my back up. Got the blower dirt cheap so theres no loss there either. Thanks!

Im looking to pick up a service manual and do learning on this thing before i get rid of the blower anyway. Hate not knowing how something works. Would be nice if there was a gearbox that would attach to the pto to reverse the direction.
