MH 44 shifter

I have a Massey Harris 44 gas row crop, and it shifts fine, but it is very sloppy. It has so much slop that it hard to tell if it is in or out of gear. Most old tractors the shifter doesn't move a lot when in gear. I don't know how loose it should be. It is the only 44 I have ever driven. I have a 22 and it isn't near that loose.

My guess is the two pins that locate in the shifter ball grooves are worn thin, and the grooves worn a bit wider than normal. Had one awhile back that I welded the grooves tighter, then reground to fit the pins. If I remember right I removed the original pins and turned them 90 degrees and put them back in place. Just don't drop them down in the transmission..

Thanks, when I have some time, I will take it apart and look. I figured something like that. As soon as I get my JD 60 and 40 out of the shop and get my 4430 engine rebuilt, and an engine installed in my 886 IH. That will be next on the list.
