Perkins V8 605 engine????

MF rules

Was on another online site and a guy was explaining he has a experimental engine.....V8 605 that was part of the V8 540 family back in the day.

Just curious if anybody has any info on this engine and what Massey had intentions of installing this in?
His thoughts were the cane harvesters but I know they put the 540 and 640 in those so he is not correct there.

Anybody have any spec sheets on this mystery V8 605 engine?

Anybody own one?

It was used in the Ukraine, Russia, Australia, etc in trucks, boats, and agricultural/industrial equipment. Perkins also made turbocharged V8.605's. I don't know of anything in the US that used the V8.605.

The Claas Dominator 100 and 105 could have been fitted with the Perkins 605. Those would be easy to tell apart, as the back of the hood would be covered with black soots! I like the Perkins V8, but a one with the Mercedes V6 would have ben better, IMO.
:p

Figures, all the other countries get the good
stuff......we never see the odd ball stuff here in
North America!
That engine was 180 horespower right out of the
box w/o turbocharger. Big power for in those days!
Be neat to find a complete one just for collection
purposes.....couldn't been many made!?
Many don't know they even existed!

I'm not sure......I'm guessing in the 540 time frame.......1972 - 1979 time frame????
Never seen any production dates on the above links on here.

The time frame on the Perkins engines are kind of a gray area. I think the reason you don't see engines like the Perkins V8.605 here in the US is that Caterpillar seems like was the go to for the big diesels.

I've heard of guys "that could tear up an anvil"......u must be one of those guys to post such a comment about a 640 Perkins.......one of the toughest engines built......and yes, I too own a 640 Perkins......if you woulda been talking of the 24 speed transmission then I would have to agree with you!

The V8-605 looked like a V8-640. It had the same rockshaft cover, and thus, was different from the V8-540.

The V8-540 on the MF860 combine is said to provide 184HP without turbocharger, and it probably does it while smoking a lot. On the Claas 680 chopper, the TV8-540 is pushing 240HP!

On the internet, the weight of the V8-540 and V8-640 is way different. Is that true? The V8-640 is so much heavier and stronger than the 540? Then I should put a TV8-640 in my 860!

You are correct, the weight difference of the 540
and 640 is quite significant......lots of MF tractor
pullers are using 640 blocks as their base for
engines in their tractors......not much else is stock
tho!
The big White/Massey rotary combine 9720/8590
used the 640 Perkins in it......I believe it was rated
at 248 horsepower non turbo'd.
I'm no engineer but why couldn't a guy put a 640 in
a 760/860 Massey combine?
How did claas get that 540 turbo'd engine up to
200+ horsepower and keep together!? That's a lot
of power!
