Permatran vs. power steering fluid?

I am working on a MF 255 with power steering. The service manual states " fill reservoir with Permatran oil. In place of Permatran, which I don't have, will power streering fluid work OK without damage to the steering components?

Permantran is "Universal Tractor Fluid" so while I can't speak to having power steering fluid being used, UTF is easier to find than Permantran.

I know ths is the usual cop-out answer, but I would not want bad consequences. My MF manual says for transmission and hydraulics, for my MF-240-S, I am to use STOU univerasal oil [ whatever that may be ], OR M-F specification M1135 or M-1139 fluid, OR MF Permatran oil, OR various viscosities of oil on a separate table. What I buy at the local farm-n-home, I make sure it reads "Equivalent to MF Permatran." My advice, Get a manual.

OOps, I see you said you have a service manual. I was talking about my old original owner's manual. Might be you could find a owner'a manual, it might state equivalent fluids. I just went out to the barn, what I use is called Champion 4000, and it states it is equivalent to a long list of MF fluds, all the ones I mentioned.
