F40 has a stiff clutch

When the clutch is pressed the 1st inch of travel goes smoothly. Then the clutch gets stiff. Great effort is necessary to push the clutch to get the gears to engage without grinding.

Is it possible to adjust the clutch so it will be easier to depress?

F 40's were made with a 2 stage clutch for the live pto and hydraulics. Usually, the first inch does nothing, the second needs more weight or muscle till about 2 or 3 inches from the bottom, but the pto and pump will continue to turn, then pressing to the bottom- the tranny gears will be free... but even then the engine should be slowed to idle so the gears will quit spinning sooner.
