David, you seen knowledgable in the 4.236 and 4.248 Perkins engines.
I have a few questions......regarding a 3060 MFWD Massey tractor.

First, this tractor is now fitted with a 4.248 engine which is no turbo'd.......is there anybody out there offering a turbocharging kit for this engine? Is this advisable to do without jeopardizing engine longevity and reliability? I'm looking to push it around 90-100 horespower.

Secondly, if above is a no go then can a 4.236T engine be fitted into this tractor with no modification and using all original sheet metal? Don't wanna be modifying things to make it work. Can a 4.236T easily achieve 100 horsepower? Will cooling capacity be an issue in long hard pulling conditions in hot summer weather?

Thanks for all/any input!

Not David, but this old MF mechanic did some parts comparing. Found the 3090 and early 3070 had the same radiator, while 3060 is probably a bit smaller. 3060 High visibility used a different air cleaner, 3070 and 3090 showed the same. While I think 90HP is possible, if the ambient temperature is very hot there may be some heat issues with the 236. I know the 3090 is a longer wheelbase but the 354 would handle what you want easily, and ride better doing it too. I've always wondered why Perkins didn't drop the compression slightly and then turbo the 4.318, that would easily get 100 PTO HP.

Hello,
The only turbo kit supplier that I am really aware of is TB Turbos of Lancaster, England. They supplied kits for many tractors in the past. As per a previous post I would be very wary about fitting a turbo to an engine unless you knew it was in very good condition or had been recently overhauled. Generally a turbo when working properly will give a power increase of 15 to 30 per cent. You don't get something for nothing. The extra load and stresses imposed on possibly worn components could well prove disastrous.

The MF 3070 was fitted with a AT4.236 engine which was rated at 93 DIN HP (100 BS HP). So, in answer to that question the answer should be 'yes'. However it will be necessary to check the size of radiator, oil cooler etc to ensure that the engine can safely give its best. The 100 HP target is a little unclear DIN HP no, BS HP yes. Don't forget that the fall-off could be quite significant if there is wear present.

I would be inclined to follow the line of thought below and think about a A6.3544. A bigger engine without the problems that a turbocharger might give.

As a comparison;
MF 698T AT4.236 90 DIN HP
MF 699 A6.3544 95 DIN HP

Thanks for the reply,

I'm looking for 100 pto horsepower.
Do you have any contact info on this TB turbo out of Lancaster England? I tried looking up a phone number and nothing came up for a website or contact info......they still in business? Website?
Ideally I'd like to just turbocharge this 4.248 and be done with it!......probably be cheapest route too!?
You mention a 6.3544 engine......will this fit in a 3060?
What tractors were the 6.3544 engine used in?

I'm currently running a new MF 5612 which I think is around 90 pto horsepower and it seems to handle my 15ft batwing mower fine......this 3060 would replace it.

Hey dieseltech!
Appreciate you doing some foot work......yeah the 3090 is outta the question tractor size wise!
This 3060 I'm looking at is a standard hood tractor......not high visibility version.
I'm not really crazy about a 3070 either......I leave my tractors set on 30" rows for row cropping if in a pinch so a low center of gravity is needed when mowing roadsides.
I have some steep ditch banks! This 3060 would be the cats meow!

Thank you ptfarmer!
Had an 1135 with a AT6.354 engine........Love the
tractor......disliked the engine!
