Hello, I am having some issues with my MF 165 dsl tractor. Tried to start the tractor the other day and didn't have enough juice to turn it over fast enough. I put the battery charger on it and let it sit for a day, went back now nothing??? It won't even turn over. It has to be something electrical, charger says the battery is charged, lights work, but nothing when I turn the key?? Any ideas on where I should start looking. Thanks Charlie

Clean both battery posts, cable clamps, cable connection on starter, and ground cable connected to frame.

Do as midwesternhayfarmer suggest if that doesnot solve the problem, then assuming you have every thing in neutral, gear shift in between gears, high/low selector at center, pto dis-engaged as required for the neutral safety to work and you still get no start. Set the brakes ( not required) but highly recommend you do, turn key switch and check small wire for voltage with key switch in the start position (power should come to this location via the switch thru the neutral safety switch on the transmission), if no power present trace back through the neutral switch to the key stitch for problem. Power at that location would lead me to think the solenoid is bad and starter needs attention.

My 165 did the same thing mine was the starter it acted like the battery was dead but my lights worked and wouldn't dim when I turned the key

Hi Charlie,
You can by-pass most of the wiring loom by connecting a cable to the live terminal on the starter and touching it to the terminal on the solenoid which activates the starter. Ensure that the gearbox is in neutral and the brakes are applied. You can safely start the engine this way. This will determine whether the starter, solenoid and battery are working correctly. If you have nothing it will be necessary to check all connections particularly the earth connection.
If all are good and you have nothing remove the starter and connect it to a battery using jumper leads. Connect a cable from the live jumper lead and touch it to the solenoid terminal. If the starter is OK it will run but without any load.
If the starter is good you will need to work back through the loom to a point where you have or don't have current going to activate the starter. Don't forget the start safety switch on top of the gearbox bousing. It may be faulty or a wire may have come off. The terminals can be joined for the purposes of testing. Don't forget to replace them.
