Got a oil leak where the 1/4" hole is between tranny/engine is-what is the leak & how big a job to fix?

first you must determine which oil is leaking ??????

motor oil = rear motor seal
transmission, hydraulic oil = front seal in transmission.

have you added oil to the transmission, hydraulic system lately? if so maybe you overfilled the sump

place a clean white paper under the tractor so you can determine the proper oil that is leaking.

must know this first.

what model tractor do you have,
what amount of oil is leaking, if it is just a small amount, it may be years before you have to do anything,

my old TO35 will leak if you fill the transmission to the full mark, I always keep it at the center line on the dipstick with the lift arms in the down position. little to no leaks at this level, has been working that way for years.

If it's transmission or rear seal you will have to break the tractor in half. If not to bad leak just add oil. Depends on if you have a show tractor and don't want it to leak. Does it have a cotter key in hole? The key turns or moves around to keep open.

as others have said,
if you do not have the up side down cotter key in the drain or drip hole.

be sure to install one if you split the tractor,
I have been told you can install one without splitting the tractor, but it would be much easier if the tractor housing was apart.

this key keeps that drip hole open and does not let the oil build up.

I got my tractor stuck one year, the drain hole was filled with mud, I did not know it was stopped up and it was late fall, so I did not drive in the tall grass and weeds. The key is designed to turn as you drive along in grass, etc, and keep the hole open.

so oil built up in the sump and ruined my clutch. reason I am aware of clutch issue, my clutch was fine, I just ruined it by letting the oil build up.

If you do not have a cotter key in place, you should take a nail, small screwdriver, something and insure that hole is open each time you fill the gas can, as dirt can mix with the oil that may drip out and slowly clog up the drain hole.

just a heads up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's very very common to leak both oil and hyd. fluid. Both require splitting to ATTEMPT to fix.The hyd. leak may be un fixable unless you can find new parts as where the seal rides could be scratched. I'd just park it on an incline.
