Pulling stumps now won't start

A month ago I was using my gas MF135 to pull stumps. It was running fine until late in day when I shut it off for an hour or so. Then it struggled to start, the engine was making rumbling noises and vibrating but it finally started. Now it has sat for a few weeks and turns over slow due to what seems to be something bogging the engine down and making that same rumbling noise. Something is stopping it from cranking the normal speed. Something does not seem right with engine. Any ideas as to what could have all of sudden occurred with engine. It is a Perkins gas with only around 1060 hours and it has been a great tractor. I guess pulling stumps was not a good idea. Thanks for any ideas.

Thanks 2tractors I can try that. But can you explain why the starter turns the motor over but just not fast enough. A hung up starter could to that?

Could be the brushes are starting to go, or there is a lot of dirt etc. in the housing. Could be the the bushing in the housing that holds the armature true is getting worn. Next time it does this, feel the side of the starter. If it's warm, you need to service it before it quits completely. Isn't doing your armature any good.

when you try starting are you pushing the clutch down?this will make it turn over easier and tell you that it is a engine problem only and not the trans or a hyd. problem

Yes I am pushing the clutch down when trying to start it. It never occurred to me that it could be the starter. I think it is the original one and the tractor is a 1974 so it could use replacing or rebuilding anyway.

I was having the exact same thing happen to me today but not pulling stumps. I pulled the starter and took apart. The brushes were shot. Going to get new brushes in the A.M.

I am guessing the starter just finally went, probably had nothing to do with pulling stumps :)

(quoted from post at 04:41:46 11/25/15) I was having the exact same thing happen to me today but not pulling stumps. I pulled the starter and took apart. The brushes were shot. Going to get new brushes in the A.M.

Picked up brushes at NAPA. Part # R504 $3.65 +tax for 4 brushes.

Well I finally got back up to where I keep the tractor and removed the starter. This is very embarrassing and feeling very stupid. Let me explain. Seems my tractor does not have the cotter pin that allows oil to drain from the bell housing. So as a result the hole got plugged and started to accumulate oil which eventually got into the starter. Since the oil did not get as high as the starter I am assuming what happened is that the fly wheel deposited a drop or so on every revolution which then eventually accumulated in the starter. I removed it and oil ran out of it and I took it to a local place that rebuilds them. They said the brushes were shot anyway in spite of the oil issue. They also had to replace the armature because of the oil. Thanks for all your help. For some reason I just did not suspect the starter and thought I had more serious engine problems. Can't wait to install it and get it going. And.....I will put a wire or something in that hole to keep the oil from accumulating! Thanks to all and Happy Holidays.
