85 MF 242 LP vs. Gas differences

Hello all-

On a hunch and wanting to do something different, I recently picked up an 85 Massey that I'll be turning into a pulling tractor. The plan is to cover the build in The HOOK Magazine in the coming months. The tractor will compete in top-cut tire classes. One of the first questions I have, and maybe I didn't dig in the archives deep enough, is the differences between the 242 LP and Gas versions. Is it the piston design or head? I'll likely be asking many more questions down the road and I'll do my best to search the archives first before I ask redundant questions. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

wow there are also different heads gas 1754691m91--- 242lp 1017248m91----223lp 1754898m91 the valves seam to be all the same number
hope this helps

The lp has higher compression ratio, but in a L-head compression ratio is not the important thing. Airflow in, and out of the engine is where its at on a L-head (flathead). I have a lot of years of racing a flathead engine.

My serial # 41 85 gas has the 223 engine, 3 13/16 x 4 7/8. The late gas 242 is 3 7/8 x 5 1/8 bore/stroke. Which rear end are you going to use, the row crop drop box or the standard clearance planetary? I have a Super 90 row crop diesel play toy that works well in 5 and 6 MPH speed limit classes, can't pull antique though, not old enough..

Using a Standard 85, the drop axles on a row crop (have one of those too in the herd) add weight I don't need. The head question is looking at it from the perspective of which head is going to flow best out of the box, just adding some of the usual cleanup heads and the manifolds get in a performance build. Im also wondering how much the bore can be opened up safely.....Thanks for all of the help so far.

Bryan, I have a narrow front 85 with 15.5x38 on rear and I pull with it. Been pulling for two years with it. First year at 5500lbs and this year I hopped up to 6500lbs. Pulled better but still heavy in the nose a bit. I talked to a guy who pulled an 85 and suggested to go to 7500lbs. As of now I pull in second gear low and think I would be forced to pull in first only. Just giving you some pulling insight. Good luck

do you have any of the heads that could be flow tested I have a flow bench and would be glad to help ya out I might be in Wauseon

Super 90 diesel I play with runs 5000 to 7500 classes, 18.4 x 38 road worn rubber, drop box rear end, 3000 RPM limit runs L3, L4, or H1 gear depending on class. Thinking of switching to the planetary rear as it's 100 pounds lighter, but it's geared faster too. MF sped up the transmission input for the drop rear, and slowed the input down for the faster planetary rear.
