MF65- 1959 Continental Engine Miss.

My tractor was sitting in the grass idling, when all of a sudden I heard the pitch of the exhaust change. It sounds a bit like my John Deere B. I did some preliminary checks, and it seems like when I pull the spark plug wires of the front 2 cylinders it does not change much- if anything.
Can anyone make any suggestions for common troubles this engine might have had... it did something similar to this earlier in the spring, but it "fixed" itself after a short time. There is not any unusual noise from the engine.

I am not near the tractor, so I am attempting to brain storm before I head back to the farm this weekend.

Suggestions are appreciated.
 
It sounds like a fouled spark plug from here ! But that usually seems to happen when the tractor is working fairly hard.

Unless you've recently changed plugs, I'd try a new set.

The Continental in your 65 is one of the most trustworthy ever made.
 
It isn't unusual for the valves on those engines to get so far out of adjustment that the push rod comes out from under the rocker arm.
 
Finally had an opportunity to do some diagnostics this weekend.

Did a quick compression check while I had spark plugs out, found no compression on #1. Removed valve cover to find #1 exhaust valve has a broken valve spring, and pushrod was not under rocker arm.

So a question for the Continental Engine guys, why did my Push Rod fall down flush with the top of the engine block? Does that mean there is a lifter issue? I extracted the push rod, and I can find a sweet spot that will support the rod but it seems like when it is in place it is out of alignment with the rocker arm. Of all the things I found, this is the most troubling, because I don't understand how it can happen.

So that is how I left it for the weekend, time to go home and order parts. Any suggestions?
