Another z134 governor problem

My 2135 with the z134 developed a problem with the governor. It first started out with the engine surging rapidly at full throttle it would almost die out then catch itself. I managed to limp it back to the barn to start troubleshooting it. I made sure the fuel system as all good, cleaned, and adjusted the carb some, got it to idle with the throttle lever in the idle position. Now that it idles when you give it a little throttle (the throttle linkage has notches to hold the throttle) to the second notch the engine rpms goes faster than the maximum rpm it used to, and stays there (no action from the governor). Put the throttle lever back to idle it idles great, then I went from idle to full throttle, the engine rpms goes past where it normally was, but the governor brings it back down to the rpms it used to run after the governor makes it surge 3 or 4 times. I tried every different kind of way to adjust the governor I could, but however its set it doesn't change how it acts now. Now I only have idle/full throttle, and no kind of throttle in between, I'm all out of ideas.
 
Sounds to me like you started out with a carburetor fuel/flow issue, then mucked up the length of the linkage between the governor lever and the carburetor.

I don't have instructions specific to your engine, but, typically the throttle butterfly needs to hit it's wide-open position just before the governor lever reaches the end of it's movement in that direction.
 
Agree with Bob, I'll bet the carb rod synchronization needs reset. If rod is too short there's sluggish or no governor action. If too long it will have a bad surge. Make sure all linkage is free with no binding anywhere.
 
No binding in the linkage, and I did not adjust any of the carb to governor linkage while making sure it wasn't a fuel, or carburetor problem. The idle speed, and mixture screws are back where they were. I then tried adjusting the carb to governor linkage, I measured it before I made any adjustments so I could put it back to where it was. I either measured, or marked any part of the linkage before trying adjustments so I could put it back where it was. Everything is set back to where it was, but its still either idle, or wide open. I'm thinking the next step is maybe taking the front cover off to make sure everything on the inside isn't messed up some way.
 
I'm surprised that there isn't more information on setting the governor on this engine. I have found some information, but its either not very detailed, or one way to adjust it contradicts another way to adjust it.
 
What you are describing is what a couple of em did to me when the coil spring from the linkage to the thermo housing unhooked. You got to just about lay on the ground to notice it, but... easier to see that than getting inside the timing cover. Good luck.
 
The governor compensator spring, and linkage is hooked up. I'm surprised that with these Continental Z series engines out there that there isn't a video anywhere online that shows how to troubleshoot, and adjust the governor. I wonder whoever thought it was a good idea to have the carburetor, and governor right next to the exhaust manifold?
 
I have the g-176 engine on my mf-65 gas & would like to comment that we had a problem with rpms going up & down, and discovered the steering wheel when you turn it was effecting rpms. It was the mechanism under the shroud that was messing up.
 
The steering doesn't mess with the throttle, I'm going to leave it alone for a few days (so I can keep my sanity). I found the way Big Dean tested, and adjusted governors so I'm going to go and try that in a couple of days.
 
After finding out the governor isn't working at all now, I loaded it up on my trailer, and took it to my shop in town. While I was pulling the front cover I could see all the balls laying in the bottom of the governor, the cage was gone. I managed to find a couple of pieces of the cage in the oil pan, and a whole lot of smaller what used to be the cage. Ordered a new governor, got the oil pan cleaned out, now just waiting on the new parts.
