We've got one. Very solid tractor for us and it's not a cream puff either. For years it was the big tractor and did every thing. Now it fits a little less but we'll still make her sweat once in a while on the chopper or plow. The multi-power has been bullet proof, and it's still on it's original clutch with somewhere well over 7000 hours on it. The original tach broke with over 6000 hours, and I forget exactly where the new one is at.

Dad had an in frame overhaul done on it around the 6000 hour mark. I think basically new bearings, new pistons and sleeves.

We've had a 285 for a long time. It has been a good tractor for us. I would say good all around, steering, brakes, hydraulics, 3ph, etc. We have about 6000 hrs on and she is smoking some, haven't dug in yet to see why but I suspect it needs a head job and rings and sleeves.

Some complain about the 318 blowing head gaskets, but ours has been fine. We have put a clutch in it, but it has done a lot of fairly heavy tugging in its time.

I have read on here before that you should treat it like a big mid size tractor and not a small large size tractor and I believe that that is good advice.

Good luck with it,
JP.
