MF 3165 Carburetor MS TSX884

I normally work on the old fords, 9N, 2N, 8N, NAA, but I had a chance to pick up a couple of MF tractors awhile ago and am slowly trying to get them running. One is a MF35 Utility and the other is a MF3165. They both have Continental gas engines. I am having a real problem with the MS carburetor on the 3165. I have got it to start and idle fine, but I have a real hesitation in getting it to rev up. If I take it up real slow I can get it up to top rpms. I have put two different set of points in, changed the condenser, checked the spark, confirmed the gas flow out the bottom of the carb., confirmed the proper timing, checked that the centrifugal advance is working, checked for air leakage around the manifold and carb flanges. I have had the carb. apart numerous times to confirm the passages are all clear and any ports or nozzles are clear. I am seriously thinking about replacing the carburetor with either a rebuilt one from this site or a new zenith one from this site. Any thoughts or suggestions. Sorry for being so long winded.

Sounds like your a pretty decent mechanic. Air, fuel, spark all good it seems. I'd swap out the 2 carbs first. PT Farmer has a 3165, bet he can help.

Thanks for the reply, does anybody have any history with either of these two carbs, and which one they would recommend I purchase.

friend has 3165 that ran like sh-t he said it was the carb it was not it was the points so i changed it to elc. runs like a top now

You say you 'checked' the cent adv.- but, as much as I love Continentals, the timing parts are a sore spot. The balls, the tin pans, the springs and linkages can all drive you nuts. It seems if you made changes to the carb, you might need to re-adjust the linkage. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I checked the timing at idle and again after I got the engine to slowly rev up and it had advanced as it was supposed to do.

Frank;
I just left ya a setup sequence, for your carb, on the 'N' forum.
I suspect your idle air fuel mix is NOT set right!!!

have you tried drilling out main jet under load adjuster? sounds like it not getting enough fuel. drill out a couple of sizes bigger. need small drill index

Thanks for the reply, that sounds like something I may try. I have got it running somewhat better by playing with the adjustments, but the engine still does not sound right when revved up.

if you have the main load screw all the way out and rev it up, does it backfire and hesitate? if it does it sounds like itneeds more fuel. I have drilled out several mh 44 and 33/s with a lot of success.

Thanks for the reply. That sounds a lot like my problem, I think I will see if I can round up a set of small bits and give it a try, thanks.
