MF 3165 Dual Clutch

HI All,

After a long lay-off,I got back to fitting my 3165 Dual clutch today.
Best thing I did was buy the manuals...Operator,Loader,Parts & Shop books .

I added the 3 piece Air Ring ,as well as 2 new plates, 12 springs & 3 finger bolts.

I found an adjustment technique using a vernier for the finger bolt ajustment..but I am wondering if I need to buy the special adjuster tool.

This tractor-loader has the dual clutch, but no PTO shafts or hydraulics run from it.As my PTO clutch plate will not be busy, should it be adjusted a different way to the spec ?

Next job is reseal the rams & fix up a lot of rough edges.
I have bucket, forks, crane & a rear ripper which will make her a handy old girl.

Thanks again for your advice.

G'day Jim,
You might find that altering the position of clevis pin (no. 33) from the front hole to the rearmost position on arm (no. 25), may make the pedal operation a little easier, as you won't need the "full" amount of travel to disengage the second or PTO stage of the clutch.
This will drop the height of the pedal and the amount of knee work you'll need to operate the tractor.
Just a thought,
Evan.

Thanks Evan,

Good idea...I'll set that up after I get her all joined up again,& see how it feels.

I might go ahead with the Vernier adjustment of the clutch today & see if it looks OK.I guess the main thing is getting them as even as possible ,to meet the bearing evenly.

G'day from 'Old' South Wales,
I can add a little to what Evan has suggested. I have the linkage on my 165 set in the
second hole and it makes one h*** of a difference. After years of pressing MF clutch pedals
the left knee is not quite as strong as it was not will it lift as quick in an emergency.
Having the pedal set in the single stage only makes it feel almost like there is something
wrong with it as it is so easy to press. Whilst I have the PTO and hydraulics the tractor
is only used for show purposes.

If you have no hydraulics , then you had no need for the pto plate nor belville spring! My pic shows the settingg tool for adjusting the finger bolts......Sam

Guys,

Thanks for your helpful replies.
That's the first time I've seen a good picture & diagram of the finger adjuster.I'll make one up .
I wondered about the role of the PTO plate & Bellville spring on this machine.I put them back as I thought they might be needed to take up some space.
I even considered getting a single clutch assembly, but just not sure if it was the right fit with flywhhel design & shaft lengths, etc.I'm totally novice on the dual clutch repair.

I'm hoping to get back to the tractor later this week.
The last thing I'll do is alter the pedal linkages.

Thanks again,
Jim

Hi again,

I have a couple more questins relating to my 3165:

It seems my pressure plate might be worn...lots of movement in the pin & finger area.

Is it possible to fit a Single Clutch in place of my Dual?(remembering I have no PTO or hydraulics).
There were,I believe,2 flywheels used on the 203 engines,& the 3165 input shafts appear to be the same on Dual & Single transmissions. If I can get the flywheel sorted,I wonder if it's OK to fit a single clutch.
I'm interested in your thoughts.

Also,
My 203 engine ID plate is gone.
Are there any serial numbers stamped on the engine that will help me identify it?

Thanks again,

Jim
