mf 40b stuck between gears

It's a 40b with the 6 speed mechanical shuttle. Was going from first gear to either 2 or 3 in low range and the shifter got stuck. Can not move the gear shifter. Hi-low moves normal and the tractor does free wheel (acts like it's in neutral). Any quick fixes or do I need to take the top cover off? I've never had this problem in the 7 years I've owned this tractor.

Common problem when shifting too fast, the shift rail you sifted FROM overshot neutral while the shift lever ball made it into the other rail groove. Take the oil fill cap off, place high-low in start position to release any gear tension. Use a long bar or heavy screwdriver to move the gear as needed until the shift lever will move left and right again. And tell junior to slow down, it ain't a HURST..

X two on what dieseltech said. Holding the clutch down seems to help too. Its never happened to me but my helpers have jammed mine up a few times. Don't try forcing the shifter or you'll end up putting a shift fork in it.

My old TO35 did that a few times over the years.

Finally I learned to slow down shifting and I always try to keep a little downward pressure on the shifter lever as I shift.

So far after I retrained myself, it's been years since the transmission locked up.

Good luck,

Happened to me twice so far in my MF35. Sorry to say Nick but you will have to remove cover. As already posted, slow down on shifting. I'm so slow shifting now that I count One-Mississippi Two-Mississippi.....well not really but after the last fix....removing steering box to lift cover, i move pretty slow.

Did not mention, the Times my TO35 did lock,

I just unscrewed the transmission fill plug, used a large screwdriver and pried the shifter rails or slides (do not know the proper terms) back into position.

Be sure clutch petal is pushed down, if by yourself, you may have to tie it down!!!!!

Guess if your transmission is in better shape than mine, it may be harder to pry the shift rods back into proper order.

When did you last change the transmission fluid? If you do not know you may be running half water, if the tractor sets outside.
