MF202 Workbull Assistance

I own a 1962 MF 202 Workbull with the loader. Learned a lot about repairing some issues that arose with the tractor in the past few years but now faced with something I'm not sure about. Ran a few winters with a 6ft scraper blade on the 3pt hitch to clear snow, and recently purchased a 7ft single auger JD blower. Worked very well last winter, but over time I've noticed the lever to raise/lower the 3pt hitch getting pretty stiff. I can still move it right now, but takes a lot of force.

A mechanic I called said I should try getting working some penetrating fluid in where the rod goes into the housing. Did that a couple times but no luck yet, still stiff. Since he said to keep doing it over a few days and working it each time, I'll keep trying. Just curious if someone has run into this before and how they remedied it..

Thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul,
This is quite a common problem. The advice that you have had is good and does work sometimes. There is an O ring inside the housing and if the tightness is beyond this you will not be able to reach it with the penetrating fluid. If the lever is very tight there is a real danger that you will bend or break the lever. Initially I would spray the entry point of the tube into the housing a couple of times a day and work it back and forth 20 or 30 times on each occasion. Really there is only one answer and that is to remove the cover and remove the quadrant support and strip it.

Thanks for the advise.. will keep trying over the next several days. Do you (or anyone else) have some detailed instructions on how to remove the cover and strip it down far enough to replace the o-rings or whatever is causing the stiffness, just incase?
Thanks,
Paul

The cover isn't too difficult to get of aside from the fact that it's very heavy. Remove the stand pipe, remove all the bolts, the seat if you like and the whole cover will lift off. It's possible to do if by yourself but better with a hoist or some help.
The 3pt controls on my 202 had completely seized from lack of use. As I recall the shafts are aluminum.......I could be wrong and they go through a fairly deep hole in the lift cover so using penetrating oil is a long process. I did this in combination with trying to turn and eventually pounding it out......I ended up breaking one and having to replace it.

Thanks to both Inno & DavidP for your help with the stiff lever. The penetrating oil over several days is working very well. The best result was after I removed the lever and it's key, and used a modified spray tube (with the end cut on an angle) for the penetrating oil, to force it into the cavity around the rod. It's almost back to normal now. Thanks!
