MF loader cylinder repair

A friend of mine has a newer MF with the quick detach loader. I haven't got the complete details yet but it is around 35 HP 4WD. The dealer just sold him 2 new loader cylinders by telling him his old ones probably weren't worth rebuilding. They look like new. Anyway I have been trying to get the old ones apart but there is some sort of locking ring about 1/2 inch down that keeps the end from coming out. Got the snap ring, washer, and o-ring out but can't get the end out . I can see some sort of ring in there but no way to get at it. Anyone had one of these apart?

Hi Phil,
I suspect that what you have is an internal locking wire. MF used this type frequently in the past. You should have a ramp on one side of the view hole. You will need to turn the cap of the ram until you see the plain end of the wire ring. The other end has a 90 degree bend on it which locates in the tube. Once you have found the plain end you will need to hook it up so that when you turn the cap the wire will slide up the ramp. Carry on 'unwinding' the wire until you come to the other end. Lift it out from the hole. The cap should then come off. It is a very simple and effective way of holding the cap in place. A sketch is attached.

I'm familiar with that setup David but these are not that type. There is nothing showing on the outside. These are on the newer 4WD tractors and they use the same size cylinders on both the lift and bucket curl. He said the dealer told him there is supposed to be some sort of special plastic tool in the kit to remove the lock that is down in there but it wasn't in the kits the dealer had. But his brother-in-law repairs them. Sounds kind of fishy to me. I don't trust any of the dealers around here. They will all try to rip you off.

Hi, that's a pity.
Any chance of you posting a couple of photos? Do you have the MF number for the cylinders or specifically what model they are fitted to?

Is this ram similar to the lift rams used on many models, whereby the lock ring is set into a groove on the rod?
These are removed by fully retracting the rod, then thru the oil port at the anchor end of the cylinder, placing a probe in thru the port and moving the ring to an adjacent deeper groove on the rod. The rod will then come past the retaining shoulder in the "head" end of the cylinder.
Just a thought, Evan.

There is no way to get into the cylinder through the oil port. Also I can't get a picture of the retainer as it is almost impossible to see even with a flashlight. I'm going to gather up all the info I can today.

Got more info, it is a DL 120 loader on a 2009 MF 1635 4WD tractor. I will get the numbers off the cylinder today and some pics.

Here are some pics of the cylinder, no markings on it but it is 26" overall 24" pin c-c 1 1/4 " shaft 2 3/8 tube OD and it looks like it is 1 7/8" or 2" bore. I tried to get a pic of the retainer but it didn't show much.

Phil, what you need to do is tap the head of the ram back down into the cylinder bore, but be careful doing it so as not to damage the threaded section.
Use a small diameter of brass rod that will fit in between the rod and the inside of the bore. Tap it down below flush, then prise the snap ring out of it's groove. The rod and head will then come free,
Evan.

I thank you, That makes sense, I will try it as soon as I get a chance. I've never seen one set up like that before. Guess there's a lot of things I haven't seen.

There are no threads. I removed a snap ring, then a washer, then an o-ring. Not much room to work in there. I'll keep you posted when I get back at it.

You nailed it Evan, got it apart today. There was a round wire retainer ring in there. Kind of a difficult area to get at. Thank you
