I'm working on a 52' 44 diesel, came to
me with a patchwork wiring job and
generator not charging.
I installed a new wiring harness and am
wondering if this should be a neg. or
pos. ground system.
Battery was in neg. ground when it came
to me. It has an Autolite 12v generator.

I'm not able to address your question as per a 44 D
However this ORIGINAL manual indicates P + EARTH /ROUND

My 55 diesel is a negative ground 12 volt system

They came as Positive ground for sure. About `5 years ago I bought a 44 Special diesel. I didn't know or I guess did not pay any attention to the fact it was negative ground and worked just fine. I needed a new regulator once and I kept it as negative ground.
I have a 444 gas that is 12 volt (from factory) that is positive ground. Parts book says that's correct.
