MF 230 Power Steering gear box - buy or rebuild

The power steering on my Massey 230 quit working. It was leaking out the top of the steering shaft and also the Pitman arm shafts are worn out. The gearbox I have doesn't look like what the parts lists show. Does anyone have any information? I haven't gone to the tractor parts place yet. Tried to upload a photo.

Are you sure it's a 230? I am under the opinion that the 230 had manual steering (with a steering box), or optional hydrostatic power steering, which had a hydrostatic steering unit under the dash and a ram mounted on the left side to do the work. The 235's had power steering incorporated in the steering box and were notorious for problems. Have a look at the 235 parts list and see if that matches what you have.

It's definitely a 230 (at least it has 230 decals) and it's definitely power steering. I've had it a couple of years and the power steering worked well until the fluid started leaking out around the steering wheel shaft. I assume it's hydrostatic because there are no rams. The unit doesn't look like anything in the parts books. It's incorporated into the steering gear box. Only two hydraulic hoses.

PT that looks exactly like my steering gear. Do you know if it's correct for a MF 230? The tractor has clearly been worked on so it might not be original. The schematic doesn't give a sense of the real size of the thing. The one on my tractor probably weighs 80 lbs. Any idea about parts/rebuild versus buying the entire assembly? Thanks so much for the help.

I've never rebuilt, or replaced one but I suspect it won't be cheap. My brother rebuilt the manual box on his 135, the parts cost the same as buying a rebuilt box.

Does anyone sell a rebuilt power steering box? I'm sure it'll be half the value of the tractor, or more, but it's that or scrap it. Other than the steering the little tractor is in decent shape. I really appreciate the help.

That type of steering box with the dual rods going the front wheels is a old design. If it were me I'd look for a salvage tractor that has full hydrostatic steering, and swap it over. It really depends on how much you are "mechanically inclined".
