How to remove crankshaft gear on ad3.152?

Anyone have a trick on how to remove this gear and then reinstall it on a new crank? I've tried a large gear puller and heating, but it won't budge. I'm afraid I might break the gear puller.

The way that I remove them is by putting the crankshaft in a hydraulic press and pressing the gear off the crankshaft. Installing the gear on the replacement crankshaft is the reverse process, just press it on with the press. If you try to beat it off with a hammer or use the improper tool there is a chance of damaging the teeth on the gears.

Good luck

Not a good idea to heat the gear up with a torch. The steel in the gear is tempered to withstand lots of use. Heating the gear up with a torch can change the characteristics of the metal and can change the hardness of the steel.

Ok, I got a press...thanks. Any advice on how to set it up in the press, I'm kind of new to using my press

Hi
Others have put you in the right direction for the gear removal. I did a 3.152 in a forklift for a guy It had to have a new crank. When you get
your gear off I think there might be a kinda 3/8" thick spacer behind the gear on some of them if not all originally. I think the new crank nose
might be machined different and you don't use the spacer, as it would put the gear out of line. Maybe check this out with measuring to be sure before
fitting the gear and spacer if you have it or not on the crank. I still have the old spacer kicking round the shop here someplace from this job.
i don't know if this was a Perkins update or something the new crank makers did, this project was 3 years ago now and the reason for the change is a
long lost memory.

The press I use allows me to put the crankshaft between the cross member. I put one of the heavy metal blocks across the top so that when I put the crankshaft in it has something to rest on. Once the crank is resting on the metal I move the other one in place. Push the crankshaft down flush with the gear, at this point it I usually support the crankshaft with my hand so that I don't damage it from falling to the floor. At this point a big bolt or round pin will be needed to push against the crank to push it through the gear.

Good luck.

Hi, the Perkins manual for the AD3.152 fitted in the 550 tractor says "Withdraw the
crankshaft drive gear". There is no reason for it to be anything other than a light
interference fit on the crankshaft. The pulley bolt will keep it tight. In theory a brass
drift and hammed should be all that is needed. I have always used a suitable puller and
never had any problem.
