I'm not sure it "jumped time". The Z-134 engine would need the distributor to rotate quite a bit off proper timing to stop running and no-start. Also the throttle rod and distributor are on opposite sides of engine so no mechanical interference is unlikely. Just my opinion Sarge but i would remove spark plugs and she if she spins freely. If so then check for spark. I wish I knew more about the "thunk sound". Does the motor thunk right away, after a few spins, or does the thunk happen as/when the engine tries to start. Is the battery strong enough to spin her over without seeming to strain? Let us know.

The Perkins gas is a 3 cyl. engine. Sounds like you have a loose rod/main problem. Don't do much clunking or you will have a hole in the side of the block. You must drop the oil pan and see what is loose.
