Advice for a 'new' Massey 50 owner

Just picked up a Massey 50 diesel and I wanted to see how many of the 50 owners were out there. Also, is the 50 similar to any other models out there? This is my first diesel tractor so I am venturing into new territory but the tractor runs great, starts fast and pulls strong. Has a few minor leaks but nothing a gasket change wont fix (I hope).

The lift does bleed down very quickly. Guessing its time for a pump rebuild or at least a cleanout/relief valve.

Bought her from a guy that cut his 6 acre yard 3 times a year with it for the last 15 years.

I'd check the standpipe O rings first, if blown it will drop faster than normal. That system is not meant to hold overnight if that's what you are thinking. Looks like a 1963 or 64 model, does it have the Multi-Power transmission? Neighbor had one just like it, but with the gas engine..

I have a MF50 gas that my Grandfather bought new in the '50's. My 94 year old father has a Ferguson 40 gas (same tractor) that he has owned for 30 years ( it does not get used much)except when my younger brother preps deer food plots on the local farms.

I hear that the diesel models are just as reliable as the gas versions, but I've never owned one.

My 50 is a working tractor, hay raking, manure spreader, finish mower, wagon puller, chain harrow puller.
It is a very comfortable tractor to operate.

Check the "O" ring in the hydro pump. Leak down "might" be an easy fix????

The Power Steering system is the 50's biggest weakness.

Overall, a 50 is a great little tractor for small farms, maybe one of the best ever made.

Congrats on your joining the tractor owners club. The Massey 50 is very similar to several models. The transmission, rear differential case, hydraulic pump, top cover, seat and several other parts are shared by the Ferguson TO-35, F40, and MF 135. Your tractor has the Perkins AD3.152 engine. This engine was used in several tractors in the Massey line including the TO-35, FE-35, MF50, MF135, MF150 as well as others.

I have a MF 50 in the shop now that has an allied loader with it and a Multi Power transmission. If your tractor has a MP transmission they can be expensive to fix if problems occur.

Overall a good tractor.

Simply a beautiful Tractor.:)
Could you tell us the make and Model of the Engine.
EG.

If you get chance to purchase this manual.......GRAB it!

My first tractor was a 50 gas without mp and i still have it.I've installed power steering off a 65, it still holds 40
lbs. oil pressure and is used mostly for hogging. I thought I saw that tractor on CL Ga.

Here is my 150, gas, after complete rebuild. My lift leak down problem was with the rings in the lift cylinder. Lift cover had to come off for rebuild, it's very heavy, chain fall a must.

Yeah, Perkins diesel with the Multi Power. First job will be diagnosing the lift issue and an axle seal leak. I'll start with the o rings in the lift cylinder and go from there.

Got the service manual ordered. Good to know that there are some interchangeable parts from other machines.

If the lift is working, why not get the tractor to operating temperature, then drain the
hydraulic, transmission oil,

Clean the filter if it has one,

Install the proper oil and give it a go.

These tractors will leak down to protect the system. My TO35 leaks down, if I leave the
lift in the up position with an implement. However, I never intentionally leave the
lift up with an implement when I turn off the tractor, why would you do that?

I had an old AC D14 you could leave the lift in the up position for a month with a load
and it would still be up. But why would they do that, it was not good for the hydraulic
system to hold the load up like that.

I have a 50 in the shop now with the lift apart. It had
been drifting down badly. The lift piston and cylinder
were scored up bad bad.. the 3 piston rings were stuck in
the grooves. Luckily all those parts are available new yet
for not a lot of money..
