Oil Pressure on Startup Question

Gentlemen,
Over the last 3 days, my Massey 44 has really been acting out of the normal. It starts almost immediately without choke applied, but makes a muffled knocking sound (and runs a little rough) that goes away after about 5 or 6 seconds. I also notice that the oil pressure gauge reads zero during those 5 - 6 seconds after it starts. It finally reads pressure (20 - 25 psi), smooth's out and runs pretty good. I really haven't noticed this before or was just too ignorant to be aware of it. It has the H260 engine. I'm thinking that the oil pump is the culprit. If so, are rebuild kits or rebuilt pumps still available? I have a condensed version of a shop manual (I&T) and guess I need to locate a repair manual for a 1947 model. I absolutely appreciate this forum and any assistance given.
Best Regards,
Sapper

Oil pump is fine, my MF 85 diesel does it too. The partial flow oil filter is causing it when some oil drains from the can, and it must be filled again before the gauge will register. Mine has the low rumble sound that stops when the pressure gauge comes up too..

Like you I do not like to hear that knocking noise until the oil filter fills up and the oil pressure comes up.

Had that problem in and old Chevy 6 banger truck motor, had to buy a top quality oil filter "Hastings" brand I think it was to stop the noise. It had some type valve built inside to keep the oil from running out of the filter when you turned the motor off.

It worked no noise on start up using that filter.

In my old tractor I went to shell rotella 15w40 oil, that helps maintain a better oil pressure, that is a diesel oil an still has some zinc for long motor life.

Most companies have pulled the zinc out of the motor oils EPA regulation.

Hey Maxwell!
I appreciate the response. I went to 10w40 in my tractor after replacing the rings and making sure everything in the bottom was tight. I guess I didn't pay any attention to it before and now I do. Anyway I will continue to monitor the oil gauge from here on out. Again, thanks for the info.
Regards, Sapper...

The zinc additive is no longer in Rotella 15w40 (contrary to popular belief)or other similar oils that once had more of it than regular motor oils. I think there might be some sort of additive in it's place, likely not as effective as the zinc. Zinc additives are available separately that some people buy and add to their oil but I think it's pricey. A lot of people claim that modern oils are fine without it, not sure who to believe.

The old oil with zinc provides a "cushion" mainly between the cam, and flat lifters. Since the removal of zinc new engines are built with roller lifter camshafts so flattening a lobe on a camshaft is not really a problem. There are some zinc oil additives available that's for breaking in a new engine you can add with each oil change. There still is racing oils that contain more zinc to prevent wear, but the are a bit more expensive, they usually cost twice as much as what oil you use now. On race engines I use http://www.drivenracingoil.com/ but there are a couple of other oil brands like it. If you have a old tractor that's hard to get engine parts for you maybe better off with a more expensive oil like the JoeGibbs oil.
