some reviews if you have not seen them.

most seemed good, always have one or two bad, but you find that in most things.

a lot has to do with how it was cared for by the previous owner.

It does have the Perkins ad3.152 diesel, rebuild kits are reasonable. You probably can get by with a in-frame rebuild, new sleeves, pistons, rings, rod, main bearing, and gaskets. If you can do the work, or have friend that can then you would have a good, fuel efficient tractor. I wish my tractor had the ad3.152 diesel.

I've got a MF-240-S, Perkins diesel. Like it a lot, except for the grind-it-to-find-it transmission. Powerful, sips fuel, likes to operate at 1700 RPM. No chance the rings have just not seated, is there? From not operating at 1700? How many hours on the beast?

My 65 diesel had a lot of blow by when I bought it. Turned out to be the head gasket blown from #2 cylinder to where the oil drains back down from the valves. It also had 2 cracked sleeves and a cracked head. You're probably looking at an engine overhaul. I did mine 18 years ago and it's still running strong.

Only hard shift is 2nd to 3rd, have about a 1000 RPM drop there and can't be going up much of a grade. 3 to 2 is easy.

I can shift our 240 up and down without the clutch in high range, no grinding.

Having said that, it's not a loader transmission and requires patience for field work. It isn't fun to bale hay having to stop completely to shift gears, and having to stop to engage the PTO. Seems archaic when one is used to IPTO and synchro.

1734(?) RPM is 540 on the PTO, but will turn 2200 anyways.
