Can I use multigrade oil in my tractor?

My tractor is a TEF 20 massey ferguson and someone told me that they were designed for mono grade SAE 40 or 50 oil but people on this forum say it is ok to use multigrade can someone confirm this for me?

Currently using gulf western 20w 50 in the trans and engine

I run 15W40 in the engine and transmission.

There are a LOT of strong opinions out there. Lots of threads on this topic. No clear answer IMHO.

TO35 1957 model
I use:
shell rotella 15w40 in the motor
90 weight GL-1 mineral oil in the transmission/hydraulic system/differential

so far so good, runs good

You need to remember back when theses tractor where built there was no multi grade oils and the oil of the day where not near as good either. But now days the oils have come a long ways as to how good they are so yes you can use a multi grade oil. I use a 20W-50 in every thing I have at least in the engines

Today"s oil are so much better than what was available when these old machines were built. I use 10W40 in our TO-30 and have since we"ve owned the tractor.

I run 5w-40 diesel spec synthetic so I can get my oil pressure up quicker. My warm oil pressure is the same as when I ran 15w-40. No noises.
No problems, so far. I mainly run mine in the winter. If I worked it in hotter weather, I would have stayed with the 15w-40.

Hope this helps,

Aaron

So am I right in understanding that you all are using the Exact same oil in both the engine and the Trans/Hydraulic unit? I have a MF 50.

Yes even if I was using the straight mono grade it would be used in the engine and the hydraulic/trans as the hydraulic and trans system takes mineral oil not completely sure about other tractors tho but my dad used to own a belarus and it was like this aswell

not me,
I use shell rotella 15w40 in the motor
I use GL-1 90 weight mineral oil in the hydraulic, differential sump

but, my tractor is a 1957 TO-35 and that is what was called for back in the day for the transmission, hydraulic sump.

must check you tractor specs.
