MF 1085 injector pump saga...

A few weeks back I posted about my 1085 having the injector pump rebuilt. Lots of trouble getting it going, very hot exhaust and I can see flames burning out exhaust( there has always been a slight crack in the exhaust manifold and I can see flames through it...never could before). There was no power etc...seemed like the timing was off. DieselTech gave me some good advice at that time.

I talked to the pump shop and the guy was concerned and said the timing sprocket must have moved or the enging rotated...he said it can only go together one way in the pump. And it can only attach one way on the timing gear - dowel in slot and three bolts.

I have a manual and per the instructions I set the timing marks on the crank pulley and pulled the inspection port on the IP. It was off at least 3/8" from the E mark where the book said it should be...too much to rotate the pump housing.

So I took it all off. I ensured the timing marks on crank pulley again, slipped it back in where the dowel lines up and I was 180* out...no problem rotate one full rev and this time I have it lined up perfectly according to book 20* BTDC on crank pulley and on the E at square end of snap ring in the IP.

Hooked it all back up, primed with lift pump, bled everything and it started much quicker than before. I still can see a the flame in the exhaust and it is pretty loud. I didn't run it long last night and will see what it does and if it has any power today.

It still doesn't seem right to me...this tractor was running ok, I just wanted the pump rebuilt as it was leaking a lot and I just was just trying to do some proactive repairs. Its not a great tractor but its done a lot for me and it kind of has some sentimental value...not really sure why.

Any other thoughts. If the timing is set right and the pump guy says it must be right from his end??? Is this a case of the rebuilt pump actually working and I have a blown head gasket, which is possible. But why does it heat up so much only out the exhaust ( water temp sender was just replace and the water temp stay about 180*)?

Maybe this is just a rant but I'm kind of frustrated. Thanks Grant
