MF40 Ind serial number question and electrical problem

I have a MF40 with the rounded fenders and shuttle shift. I can't find the model year from the serial number...anybody have a good place to look? Look-up sites I have seen only list the farm tractors

Also, the tractor keeps draining the battery. It has a Delco 1-wire alternator. Where should I look for a current leak?

thanks

If the serial # starts with 9A your tractor is with the ag tractors too far as the SN # goes to find the year as MF ran them together in the MF Legacy book I have. To find the current leak draining the battery I disconnect the ground strap then hook a test between the battery post and the strap, if no leak the light will be off. If it does light up you have a leak, I'd start at the alternator and take the wire off. If light goes out alternator is the culprit. If light is still on then trouble is elsewhere, could even be the amp gauge. Just have to start disconnecting wires, when the test light goes out you found the suspect leak.

Also, on the current leak, do you keep the test lead hooked up in place of the ground strap during the process? If it lights up, leave it in place of the ground strap and start unhooking wires until the light goes off?

In 1967 Massey Ferguson switched the agricultural, and industrial tractor serial numbers to the 9A designation. What's the serial number on your 40 industrial?

Yes, leave the test light in place. On a correctly working electrical system light will not be on. If it's on means there's a current draw somewhere. For the serial # use the ag listing, or post the # and someone will find it for you..

SN is 9A2I2879

The 40 industrial has the same dash that my 1965 MF2135 industrial uses. The MF industrials use almost all the same parts as the MF agricultural tractors. I had problems finding a couple seals for my 2135, these guys helped me find the seals I needed http://www.gbdorning.com/ they still know the industrials. The part numbers for the seals I needed had been changed.
