Can anyone enlighten me as to the differences between these two models. The Kay thing I want to know is the French version all metric or is it imperial?

Tractors, I can't tell you. But bicycles, I can tell you that French theads [ whatever in the world they may be ] don't correspond to anything on the planet. French theads are not English, they are not metric, they are not Whitworth. Whatever in the world they may be, if it's actual "French" threads, you ain't gonna be able to find anything else like them.

Thinking more about this, I seem to remember that there was once "Italian" bicycle threads, for the bottom brackets and for the pedal threads. Aren't you glad we don't have "Illinois" threads, "Alabama" threads, "California" threads....

There are a number of differences between UK/US and French-built tractors. Principally the electrical components are likely to be Jaeger and not Lucas or AC-Delco. As far as I am aware all French tractors will utilise the Metric thread system whereas the UK and US use the Imperial size. One difference in the 35 was that French versions used the French-made Hotchkiss engine whereas UK and US used the Standard 23C or the later Perkins 3-cylinder 152. From the late 90s on all 300 series tractors built in the UK used the Metric system although some bolts such as those holding the main chassis components together still used the 7/16" unc thread. Probably too expensive to re-tool to Metric.

As far as bicycles go that's another story. British Standard Cycle Thread BSCY was developed particularly for bicycle and motorbike applications. Having a finer thread meant that the core diameter of the frequently used tube could be greater. This gave a far greater shear strength to the component. BSCY was based on the Imperial system whereas French, Italian etc would have been based on the metric system. Essentially the same type of thread but made to suit the metric system.
