timing massey 1085

I am currently redoing my massey (a4.318 engine) and am having some trouble with the valve timing. My manualis relatively clear and all gears have either a single or a double slashfor alignment. The problem I have is that the cam gear has both a single slash and it has a dot. I have no idea what the dot marking is for, and I am assuming that the single slash marking that I align with the double marks on the idler gear but that is only my best guess
The pictures in my manual are not clear enough to really help

Sam.

I just looked at some A4.300 gears, earlier version of the A4.318. The idler gear has three sets of paired dots, one set at crank gear, one set at injection pump drive gear, and one set for the cam gear. When all are aligned the camshaft key will be at about 4 O clock position when the correct mark is used. The cam gears I have show a single dull chisel mark on one tooth only. Later gear may be a dot, but there should only be one mark, of either type..

That is what I am assuming. When the single slash/chisel mark is used the cam keyway is at about 4 oclock. There is still the single dot on the gear that is about 130 degree away pretty much in line with the other access hole . I will be using the single slash /chisel mark to assemble.

Thank you for your reply

Sam
