255 shifting problem

I've got a new to me 255 row crop with multi power and independent PTO that was sitting for several years before the P.O. bought it, rebuilt the engine & sold it to me. It runs fine and there is no slippage to the clutch. Problem is, I have it adjusted as per the book and it can be difficult to get it out of gear sometimes. It also will roll like it's in neutral when the motor is shut off (it is always in high range on the multi power. All my other tractors have live pto so this one is a little different. The tractor stops just like any other one when the clutch is depressed. Just wondering if it could possibly be rust on the pressure plate or flywheel that may be causing the problem, we've only used it 2 afternoons to bale with, one with the square baler and one with the round baler. The P.O said he checked the clutch when he had the engine out of it doing a rebuild & I really don't think he was leading me to believe something that wasn't true. Keith

How does it feel when you shift into low range then back into high range with the multi-power? When going from low to high on the multi-power is it a good firm hit (kinda like when you dump the clutch), or does it feel like it slips going into high range?

Are you having a problem getting it out of gear when the Multi-Power is in high? That is normal. Just shift the M-P to low first. High M-P is engaged with hydraulic pressure. Low M-P is driven by an over-running clutch. There is no hydraulic pressure to keep high M-P engaged when the engine is not running.

My 175 won't hold in gear when turned off on an incline. Just lock the brakes.

They can be hard to get out of gear on an incline as well when the multi power is in high and you're stopped. Just shift the multi power to low and it'll come right out.

I'm sure you've figured out that there is also no engine braking in multi power low either.

I hated the multi power when I first got it. Gave it a summer, now I love it. Especially on the baler.

It's a good solid hit, but not operating one with a multi power, I've been leaving it in high range, so a big thanks to you guys for the information, we'll give it a shot at putting it in low before taking it out of gear & when putting equipment in the building. Keith

Hi Keith,
In the UK it's called Hill-hold. When in MP high in a forward gear the tractor will not run backwards unless you press the pedal to the floor in the PTO stage and vice-versa when in a reverse gear the tractor will not run forwards. As has been said, shifting to MP 'low' will free it.
